Teaching What Matters Most: Standards and Strategies for Raising Student Achievement
Published in Paperback by Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development (July, 2001)
Authors: Richard W. Strong, Harvey F. Silver, and Matthew J. Perini
Average review score:

A recommended addition to teacher education curriculums
In Teaching What Matters Most, education specialists Richard W. Strong, Harvey F. Silver, and Matthew J. Perini effectively collaborate to draw upon ten years of research and professional experience in three hundred schools to develop four standards that classroom teachers can utilize to help their students meet the scholastic standards established by districts, states and regions. These standards include: Rigor (helping students make sense of challenging texts and ideas); Thought (helping students become adept users of powerful learning disciplines); Diversity (helping students understand themselves and others); Authenticity (helping students apply what they learn to the real world). Coherent, accessible, and readily understandable, these standards are thematically applicable to all of the diverse communities and constituencies that compose the American educational landscape today. Documented lessons from real classrooms showcase and illustrate the application of these standards as applied to curriculum development, instruction, assessment, and student state test performances. Teaching What Matters Most is a strongly recommended addition to teacher education curriculums, classroom instructors K-12, and school administrators at all levels of responsibility from department heads to school district superintendents.

The Teachings of Silver Birch
Published in Paperback by Psychic Press (1995) Limited (1998)
Author: A.W. Austen
Average review score:

An Enlightening Book on the Reality of our Souls
Very interesting book. It is a must read for anyone who is in search for the truth. Silver Birch answers our curious questions about existence. Why we exist, where we come from and going to after death, why our lives are the way they are, who we really are, why there is good and evil, and much more. Even though some people might find this book controversial to their beliefs, it is not a reason not to read it, since it makes one think and use common sense. In principle it actually reinforces religious, moral and philosophical beliefs. Anyone over 18 should start reading it to understand their real role in life.

Silver Birch was a Red Indian on earth and now an evolved being in the after world serving the great white spirit or what we call god. He explains how the universal consciousness is working through people as they express themselves individually in the material world so that they would evolve. Birch reveals the meaning of the human life, giving strength and hope to all f us here on earth and teaching us the divine laws of the universe.

The book is well organized into several topics in which silver birch teachings are conveyed. It can be easily skimmed through or read without any particular order which makes it readily accessible. Every time it's read it has a different meaning depending on one's state of mind. Enjoy, for we are all happy and peaceful in nature.

This Was Mining: In the West
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (June, 2003)
Author: David W. Pearson
Average review score:

Like Walking Through a Mining Museum
This book takes you through hundreds of historical photographs, each accompanied with a brief description. The photos range from miners working in tunnels to overview photos of camps and towns.

The information in the book is short and to the point. This is a wonderful resource to get the feel of what mining was like in the 19th century. There is also a section showing antique mining tools, certificates, and other pieces of paperwork that might interest collectors.

The book touches on mining in many states. Included with each state section is a brief history on how mining came to be and how it changed life in the towns at each location.

An incredible pictoral resource, the book doesn't go into huge volumes of detail regarding mining life, but David Pearson touches on all major aspects of mining in the Old West. The book is one of the best on this subject that I have found!

Three Legions: The Eagle of the Ninth, the Silver Branch and the Lantern Bearers
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr Childrens Books (June, 1987)
Author: Rosemary Sutcliff
Average review score:

A positive review for an outstanding series
I have read these three books and have found them to be a great look into the Roman Era. Sutcliff presents the scenes beautifully and captures the hearts of readers young( my age, 12) to older people. The books are only slightly related to each other and a few themes are recurring creating a familiar feel to her writing style. I have enjoyed many of her books and thhis one is no exception, beacause several are set in the same time period which not only provides an entertaining read but you can LEARN things about the culture. Sutcliff has a great descriptive mind and it is evident in this series of books. She's probably the best author I've encountered in my short life. Some other of my favourite books by her are Simon, Warrior Scarlet, and Bonnie Dundee. I recommend these books due to the fact they are very good at showing the real side of history not just the fancy-free silly stuff we hear about in other books.

Tropical Rain Forest
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (31 October, 1998)
Authors: Donald M. Silver and Patricia J. Wynne
Average review score:

Great, whether you get to the rain forest or not
The One Small Square series is wonderful: the concept is that you take a hypothetical square foot of an environment- woods, seashore, arctic tundra, rainforest, etc.- and explore it at all levels, from underground to the sky. Each book is extensively illustrated with all of the inter-connected layers of life- from fungus to megafauna- in the Square. On the margin of most of the 2-page spreads are activities that you can do, no matter where you live. Food chains, life cycles & seasons are explored, and the back section has an identification guide to all of the life forms presented in the book.

We took One Small Square: Tropical Rain Forest with us on a trip to the Brazilian rainforest with our 5 & 7 year olds. The book was great- for the grown ups & the kids! We used it as a guide to identify many of the animals & plants we saw, as background to help the girls understand what they were going to see, as reading on the long trips up the river. We did many of the activities- some before, some during, and some after the trip. Our guide was so impressed with it that he ordered a copy for himself, saying that it was hard to find something with so much information that was both accurate and interesting to people at many different levels of knowledge. Highly recommended!

The Untold Story of Frankie Silver: Was She Unjustly Hanged?
Published in Paperback by Down Home Pr (June, 1998)
Author: Perry Deane Young
Average review score:

Seperating fact from fiction of an old legend
As a direct descendant of Frankie Silver (She was my G-G-Grandmother) I have heard the story all my life, but learned many new facts about the case. I found a few dates to be incorrect, and many names omitted, but this does not detract from the essence of the story. A thoruoghly researched book that debunks many of the myths surrounding the hanging of Frankie Silver. Good reading for history buffs and a MUST for family members.
